Gandhi the man of peace

Born in India in 1869, Mohandas Gandhi worked as a lawyer.

Gandhi lived a life that was very simple: donating his possessions and wearing simple clothes called “khadi”, made from cotton yarn by hand.

His desire was for India to be completely independent from Britain and he wanted it to be without violence.

Gandhi told Indians to protest in peaceful and non-violent ways.

A protest led by Gandhi in 1930 saw 100,000 Indians walk to the sea and make salt.

The intention was to protest the fact that only the British could make and sell salt at that time.

The British put Gandhi in prison on many occasions for his protests.

He traveled to Britain in 1931 to discuss the future of India.

He met British factory workers because he wanted to learn about the cotton industry in Britain.

India gained independence from Britain in 1947.

India, with an unpopular decision, was divided into two separated countries:

  • India for Hindus

  • Pakistan for Muslims

In 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by gunshots.

His killer thought that Gandhi was responsible for the division of India.

Gandhi was an influential and respected leader. It's for this reason that people called him “Mahatma” which means “Great Soul”.
